Service overview

Emergency call-outs explained

Loss of power, a burning smell, exposed or damaged cable, these are not jobs to leave until Monday. Standard hours are 8am to 5.30pm, with emergency call-outs available evenings, weekends and 24/7.

What it involves

Emergency call-out for dangerous or disabling electrical faults: total or partial loss of power, repeatedly tripping supplies, burning smells, scorched or sparking accessories, damaged or exposed cable, water ingress into electrical equipment, and shocks from taps, appliances or fittings.

The priority on arrival is always to make the installation safe. Diagnosis and repair follow, with the repair priced for your approval before it is carried out.

Who it is for

Householders across Purley, Croydon and Surrey who have lost power in the evening. Landlords whose tenant has reported a dangerous fault. Shops, offices and workshops facing a failure mid-trade. Anyone who can smell burning and does not know which circuit it is coming from.

When you need it

Call immediately, at any hour, for: a burning or fishy smell from a socket, switch or board; scorch marks, discolouration or melting on any accessory; buzzing, crackling or arcing; cable that has been cut, crushed or exposed; water running onto electrical equipment; any electric shock, however slight; or a total loss of power that is not a supply outage.

Standard hours are 8:00am to 5:30pm. Emergency call-outs are available evenings, weekends and 24/7.

Why it needs a qualified electrician

The instinct in an emergency is to get power back on. Getting power back on before the cause is known is precisely how a contained fault becomes a fire.

Making safe correctly means isolating the right thing, proving it dead, and confirming the rest of the installation is not affected, which requires test equipment and someone who knows what the readings mean. Jon is NAPIT registered with £2 million public liability cover, and the work is certified afterwards.

What happens if it waits

The cost of leaving it

The gap between noticing an electrical emergency and dealing with it is where the damage happens.

Risks and escalation

  • A smouldering connection inside a wall or ceiling void can burn for a long time before it becomes visible, and by then it is a structural fire.
  • Resetting a breaker on a faulty circuit re-energises the fault; each reset adds heat to whatever is failing.
  • Water in contact with live equipment makes surrounding metalwork and standing water a shock risk to anyone in the room.
  • Loss of power to a business means lost trade, spoiled stock and, for food premises, refrigeration failure with all that follows.
  • For a landlord, a tenant reporting a dangerous fault that is not attended to promptly is both a safety and a legal exposure.

Common mistakes we are called to undo

  • Repeatedly resetting the RCD or breaker to get the lights back on.
  • Removing a scorched socket front and probing inside it without isolating and proving dead.
  • Taping up damaged cable as a temporary fix and leaving it energised.
  • Waiting until the morning to save the out-of-hours rate on a fault that is actively burning.

If you are unsure, switch the circuit off at the board and call. Advice over the phone costs nothing.

Our process

How the job runs, start to finish

  1. Step 1

    Call and triage

Jon takes the details on the phone and tells you immediately what to isolate and what not to touch, plus a realistic time for attendance.

  2. Step 2

    Make safe on arrival

The affected circuit or installation is isolated, proved dead and secured so nothing can be re-energised by accident.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose

Instrument testing locates the fault: insulation resistance, continuity, polarity and earth loop impedance narrow it down to the exact section or accessory.

  4. Step 4

    Quote and repair

You are told what is wrong and what it costs before any repair starts. Most faults are repaired on the same visit from van stock.

  5. Step 5

    Retest, restore and certify

The repaired circuit is retested before being re-energised, power is restored, and the work is certified and guaranteed for twelve months.

In detail

Emergency call-outs: the detail that matters

What counts as an electrical emergency

Not everything needs a call at midnight, and we will tell you honestly when something can wait until morning at the standard rate. These are the situations that should not wait:

  • Burning smells, smoke, or scorch marks at a socket, switch, light fitting or consumer unit
  • Buzzing, crackling, arcing or visible sparking from any accessory or the board
  • Total or partial loss of power that is not a network outage affecting your neighbours
  • A breaker or RCD that trips immediately every time it is reset
  • Cable cut, crushed, drilled through or otherwise exposed
  • Water leaking onto a consumer unit, light fitting or socket
  • Any electric shock from a tap, appliance, switch or fitting
  • A commercial premises unable to trade because of an electrical failure

What to do before we arrive

If it is safe to reach the consumer unit, switch off the affected circuit, or the main switch if you cannot identify it, and leave it off. Do not reset a device that trips immediately on reset. Unplug appliances on the circuit if you can do so without touching anything damaged or wet.

Keep people and pets away from any damaged accessory or standing water near electrical equipment. If you can smell burning and cannot locate it, isolate at the main switch and call. If there is visible fire or smoke, leave the property and call 999 first.

If your neighbours have also lost power, it is likely a network fault rather than your installation, in that case the distribution network operator is the right first call on 105.

Domestic and commercial emergencies

Domestic emergencies are usually about safety and getting a household back to normal: heating, lighting, refrigeration and hot water. We prioritise restoring safe supply to essential circuits, even where a full repair needs a return visit in daylight.

Commercial emergencies add trading loss and, often, three-phase distribution and equipment supplies. Where a full repair cannot be completed immediately, we make safe and restore what can be safely restored so the premises can keep operating, with the remaining work scheduled out of hours.

Emergency coverage area

Emergency call-outs across Purley, Croydon, Caterham, Coulsdon, Sanderstead, Warlingham, Kenley, Sutton and London. Being Purley-based keeps response times short across the CR postcodes.

FAQs

Emergency call-outs: common questions

What does an emergency call-out cost?

Evenings and weekends are charged at £140 per hour. During standard hours of 8:00am to 5:30pm, an £85 call-out covers the visit and the first hour of fault-finding work. Any repair is quoted before it is carried out.

How quickly can you get here?

Jon will give you a realistic time on the phone based on where he is. Being based in Purley means most of CR8, Croydon, Coulsdon and Kenley are a short drive.

Are you really available 24/7?

Emergency call-outs are available around the clock for dangerous faults and loss of power. Routine work is carried out during standard hours.

My RCD keeps tripping, is that an emergency?

If it resets and holds, it needs fault finding but can usually wait for standard hours. If it trips immediately every time, or there is any smell of burning, call straight away.

Will you fix it on the first visit?

Most faults are repaired on the spot from van stock. Where a part needs ordering, the installation is left safe and the repair scheduled quickly.

Do I get a certificate for emergency work?

Yes. Repairs are tested and certified, normally on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, and carry the twelve month guarantee.

My whole street has lost power, should I call you?

No. That is a network fault; call 105 to reach your distribution network operator. If only your property is affected, call us.

Can you attend a rented property on a landlord's behalf?

Yes. We attend, make safe, report back to the landlord with the diagnosis and quote, and arrange access directly with the tenant.

Is the emergency repair guaranteed?

All workmanship carries a one year guarantee, and JMO Electrical holds £2 million public liability insurance.
