Service overview
EV charger installation explained
Before anything is fitted we check what your incoming supply and board can actually take. Then the charger goes in on its own protected circuit, is tested and certified, and you are shown how to use it.
What it involves
Installation of a dedicated EV charge point: a new protected circuit from the consumer unit or a sub-board, suitably rated cable routed to the parking position, the charge unit mounted and connected, earthing arrangements confirmed or provided, and the whole circuit tested and certified.
It also covers the assessment that comes first, incoming supply capacity, main fuse rating, existing load, board condition and available ways, and the earthing arrangement at the property, which determines what protection the charger needs.
Who it is for
Homeowners in Purley, Croydon, Caterham, Coulsdon and the surrounding Surrey area with off-street parking, a driveway, garage or carport. Businesses fitting charge points for staff, fleet vehicles or visitors. Landlords adding charging to a rented property or a small block.
When you need it
Before the car arrives, ideally. Lead time matters if the board needs upgrading or the supply needs attention, so book the assessment as soon as the vehicle is ordered.
Also a natural point to fit one during a rewire, consumer unit upgrade or driveway project, when cable routes are already accessible and the extra cost is marginal.
Why it needs a qualified electrician
An EV charger is one of the largest continuous loads a domestic installation will ever carry, hours at near-maximum current, repeatedly, often overnight. Anything marginal in the existing installation shows up under that duty.
It is also notifiable work under Part P and carries specific requirements around earthing and shock protection, including how PEN conductor faults are handled on TN-C-S supplies. Getting that wrong creates a genuine electrocution risk involving the car's metal bodywork. Jon assesses and installs to the current regulations and certifies the work.
What happens if it waits
The cost of leaving it
Charging from an unsuitable supply is the point at which existing weaknesses become failures.
Risks and escalation
- Charging through an extension lead or a standard socket for hours at a time overheats plugs, sockets and cable, and is a recognised cause of domestic fires.
- A supply or main fuse that cannot support the added load means repeated main fuse failures, an outage that only the distributor can restore.
- On a TN-C-S supply without correct open-PEN protection or an earth electrode, a network fault can make the car's bodywork live.
- An undersized cable run to a distant garage will run hot and lose voltage, reducing charge rate and degrading the circuit over time.
- Uncertified installations can affect insurance, manufacturer warranties and any grant or funding claim.
Common mistakes we are called to undo
- Buying a charger online on price alone, without knowing whether it suits the property's earthing arrangement or supply.
- Assuming a 7kW unit is always possible, load and supply capacity decide that, not the marketing.
- Fitting the unit on the wrong wall, so the tethered lead does not comfortably reach the vehicle's charge port.
- Squeezing the circuit into a full or unprotected consumer unit rather than upgrading it first.
Jon checks the supply, earthing and board before quoting, so the price and the charge rate you are given are the ones you end up with.
Our process
How the job runs, start to finish
Step 1
Supply and board assessment
Incoming supply, main fuse rating, earthing arrangement, existing load and spare capacity at the board all checked, plus the parking position and cable route.
Step 2
Specification and free quote
Charge rate, unit type, mounting position and any board work set out in a free written quote, with anything that needs upgrading identified up front.
Step 3
Installation
Dedicated circuit installed with correctly rated cable and protection, unit mounted, earthing arrangements provided where required, cable routes made neat and secure.
Step 4
Testing and commissioning
Full circuit testing, protective device verification, unit commissioned and connected to its app or network where applicable, then a charge proven on your vehicle.
Step 5
Handover, certification and guarantee
You are shown how to use it, the work is certified and notified under Part P through NAPIT, and the installation is guaranteed for twelve months.

Benefits
What you get out of it
Charge overnight, safely
A dedicated circuit designed for continuous load, instead of a socket doing a job it was never intended for.
Honest charge rates
You are told what the supply supports before ordering, so nobody promises 7kW on a property that cannot deliver it.
Correct shock protection
Earthing and open-PEN protection handled to current regulations, the part of the job that actually keeps you safe.
Neat installation
Cable routes planned and clipped properly, unit positioned where the lead reaches without stretching across a drive.
Certified and notifiable
Certification and Part P notification for insurers, warranties and future buyers.
Room to grow
Where the board is being upgraded anyway, we leave capacity for a second unit or future circuits.
In detail
EV charger installation: the detail that matters
What determines your charge rate
Most domestic installations are single-phase, where a 7kW unit at around 32A is the practical maximum. Whether that is achievable depends on the main fuse rating, the existing maximum demand of the property and whether load management is needed to keep total draw within limits.
Where capacity is tight, a load-managed installation lets the charger reduce its draw automatically when the shower or oven is running, rather than forcing an expensive supply upgrade. Three-phase supplies, common in commercial premises, allow higher-output units.
- Untethered and tethered units for driveways, garages and carports
- Load-managed installations where supply capacity is limited
- Long cable runs to detached garages, usually in steel wire armoured cable
- Sub-board installations where the existing consumer unit has no spare capacity
- Workplace and small commercial charge points, including multiple units
- Earth electrode installation where the earthing arrangement requires it
Earthing, open-PEN protection and why it matters
Most local properties are on a TN-C-S (PME) supply. Under a rare network fault the earth can rise to a dangerous potential, and since an EV's bodywork is connected to that earth while charging outdoors, the regulations require specific protection.
That is satisfied either by a charge unit with integrated open-PEN detection, or by installing an earth electrode to form a separate TT arrangement for the charging circuit. Jon determines which applies at the assessment stage, it affects both the unit choice and the price, which is why the assessment comes before the quote.
Domestic and workplace installations
Domestic installations are single units on a dedicated circuit, notifiable under Part P, and usually completed in a day. Workplace installations bring in load management across multiple units, cable containment across car parks, access control and usage monitoring, and planned phasing so parking stays usable.
For businesses we schedule works around opening hours, including evenings and weekends where necessary, and provide the documentation required for insurers and landlords.
Areas covered
EV charge point installation across Purley, Croydon, Caterham, Coulsdon, Sanderstead, Warlingham, Kenley, Sutton and London, for homes, workplaces and rented property.

FAQs
EV charger installation: common questions
How much does an EV charger installation cost?
It depends on the unit, the cable run and whether the consumer unit or earthing arrangement needs work. The assessment and written quote are free, and everything is itemised before you commit.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward domestic installation is usually completed within a day. Long cable runs, board upgrades or earth electrode work can extend that.
Can I have a 7kW charger at my property?
Usually, but it depends on your main fuse rating and existing demand. Jon checks the supply first and tells you honestly, including whether load management is the sensible answer.
Do I need a new consumer unit?
Only if the existing board has no suitable spare way or lacks the protection required. If it does need changing, that is priced in the original quote, not sprung on you later.
Can you install a charger in a detached garage?
Yes. That normally means armoured cable buried to the correct depth and, depending on the arrangement, a small board at the garage end.
Is the installation certified?
Yes: tested, certified and notified under Part P through our NAPIT registration, with a one year workmanship guarantee.
How long will the installation last?
The circuit itself is a permanent installation. Charge units carry their own manufacturer warranty, and we would recommend the circuit is included in your periodic inspections.
What if the charger stops working later?
Call us. Faults on installations we have carried out are covered by the guarantee for twelve months; beyond that, fault finding is £85 during standard hours covering the first hour.
Do you install chargers for businesses?
Yes: workplace, fleet and visitor charging, including multiple units with load management, scheduled around your opening hours.
