What it involves

The work includes the circuit that feeds it: a correctly protected supply, suitably rated cable routed and buried or clipped to standard, weatherproof terminations, and switching or sensor control set up the way you actually want it to behave.

When you need it

Why it needs a qualified electrician
Outdoor circuits are the highest-risk part of a domestic installation: water, ultraviolet degradation, frost, spade damage and earthed metalwork all in one place. They are also the most common source of the RCD tripping we get called out to.
Doing it properly means selecting the right IP rating for the location, glanding correctly so water cannot track along the cable into the fitting, using cable suited to being outdoors or buried, and protecting the circuit with an RCD as the regulations require. None of that is visible once the light is on, which is exactly why it gets skipped.

Outdoor lighting wired like indoor lighting fails, and it fails in ways that trip circuits inside the house.
Risks and escalation
- Water entering a fitting or junction corrodes conductors and leaks current to earth, tripping the RCD and taking out circuits indoors, usually at night, in the rain.
- Standard indoor cable clipped along a fence or wall degrades under UV and cracks, leaving conductors exposed at head height in a wet environment.
- Buried cable that is not armoured and not at the correct depth gets cut by a spade or fence post, sometimes without anyone realising until someone touches the metalwork.
- Poorly aimed security lighting creates glare and deep shadow, which makes a property less secure and generates complaints from neighbours.
- For commercial premises, failed external and car park lighting is a slip, trip and fall liability as well as a security problem.

- Spurring a garden light off an indoor socket circuit through a hole drilled in the wall with no gland and no additional protection.
- Using indoor-rated fittings outside because they were cheaper, then replacing them every two winters.
- Choosing enormous floodlights when lower-output, better-placed fittings would light the area without blinding anyone.
- Burying ordinary twin and earth in the garden, which is neither compliant nor recoverable when it fails.

Fittings, materials and ratings
Fittings are selected by location: IP44 is generally adequate for a sheltered wall light, IP65 for anything exposed to driving rain or hose-down, and higher again for ground-recessed or submerged installations. Coastal and heavily exposed positions call for corrosion-resistant bodies and stainless fixings.
Supply cable outdoors is either steel wire armoured for buried and exposed runs, or suitably protected and UV-stable cable on surfaces. Buried cable is laid at the correct depth with warning tape above it, and every entry into a fitting or enclosure is glanded so water cannot track in along the sheath.

Controls and how the lighting behaves
How lighting is controlled matters as much as the fitting. A PIR on a driveway needs sensitivity and detection zone set so vehicles and people trigger it but passing traffic does not. Garden lighting is usually better on a switched circuit or timer than on motion detection, so it lights the space for an evening rather than flicking on and off.
We commonly split external lighting into zones, security at the front, amenity at the back, so each can be controlled independently. Note that JMO does not install smart home wiring or home automation systems; controls here mean conventional switching, sensors and timers, done well.
Residential and commercial differences
Domestic exterior lighting is generally about security, safety underfoot and making outdoor space usable. Commercial exterior lighting adds duties: lighting levels for car parks and pedestrian routes, avoiding light spill onto neighbouring property, and interfacing with emergency lighting requirements inside the premises.
Commercial installations are usually run on dedicated circuits from a distribution board with timed or photocell control, and we schedule the work outside trading hours where access demands it.

Outside & external lighting: common questions
How much does outside lighting cost to install?
It depends on the number of fittings, the cable runs involved and whether anything needs burying. Jon quotes free and in writing, with fittings and labour set out separately.
How long does the installation take?
A security light on an existing supply is often an hour or two. A full garden or driveway scheme with buried cable is usually a day or more depending on the ground and the routes.
Can you run power to the far end of the garden?
Yes: armoured cable buried to the correct depth, feeding lighting and, if you want, sockets or a small board for an outbuilding.
Why does my outside light keep tripping the electrics?
Almost always water ingress into the fitting or a joint, or damaged buried cable. We test the circuit, locate the point of failure and replace or reseal it properly.
Will the security light trigger constantly?
Not if it is positioned and set up correctly. We aim the sensor and adjust sensitivity, lux and timing with you so it responds to what you want it to.
How long do LED exterior fittings last?
Good quality LED fittings, correctly rated and sealed, typically run for many years of nightly use. Failures outdoors are far more often water ingress at the installation than the LED itself.
Do I get a certificate for the work?
Yes. New circuits and alterations are tested and certified, and the work carries a one year workmanship guarantee.
Can you install lighting for a commercial car park or yard?
Yes: including column and wall-mounted floodlighting, photocell and timed control, and scheduling outside trading hours.
Can you come out at short notice if exterior lighting has failed?
